<image:caption>Rating: 4 out of 5. Predictably, I loved the writing style, atmosphere, and main character in V.E. Schwab’s newest novel. The plot may feel underdeveloped to some folks, but it was written loosely with intention. Overall, Gallant was a memorable reading experience that had an impact on me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rating: 4 out of 5. This is probably one of the more unique Arthurian retellings I’ve read. I enjoyed the Sebastian’s fresh take on the familiar characters and plot, as well as the discussions on mental health that this book prompted. My biggest complaint is how it fails to presents the topic of feminism as advertised.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rating: 3 out of 5. While not terrible, this Agnes at the End of the World was not at all what I expected (mainly because I do no think its advertisement as a post-apocalyptic sci-fi is accurate). Generally, though, I enjoyed the different religious perspectives that this work introduced to the genre, as well as the sibling relationship between the two main characters. My least favorite part of this book was the use of a particular plot device in preventing conflict for Agnes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rating: 3.5 out of 5. I read Dance of Thieves a month ago and am just now getting to the review! Whoops! From what I can remember, this book had pretty stereotypical characters and some wonky past-tense narration. It also heavily relies on the reader having information from the author’s other series (information which I did not have), so it was harder to get through. The suspense at the end was pretty decent, though.</image:caption>

I was delighted by Mahurin’s strong character development, steady pace of plot, and decent usage of the enemies to lovers trope. I was also enthralled by her creation of a unique magic system. <image:title>Book Blog - Review: Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 3 out of 5. This is my first Adrienne Young book, and I honestly wish I took the time to read it slower and really soak it up. Even as a YA fantasy, it’s quite different than my normal read. The world-building is brutal, and the story focuses more on familial relationships than romantic ones. My biggest complaint is probably that there was a slight lull in the action in the middle of the book.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 3 out of 5. I finished To Kill a Kingdom last week, but I read an entirely different book and finished its corresponding review before returning to write this one. I just didn’t really feel one way or another about this story. It’s not bad; there were a couple of cool elements (such as the use of linguistics to elevate the world-building), but the character development and the dialogue were not there for me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: Once & Future by Cori McCarthy and Amy Capetta - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 2.5 out of 5. I learned about Once & Future from a Buzzfeed article. The concept of King Arthur’s adventures playing out in space was what initially drew me in, but my favorite element of the book ended up being the internal conflict of Merlin’s character. I also really liked the diversity of characters in general, but I think their relationship dynamics and the overall depth of the story were somewhat lacking.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 4 out of 5. The Obelisk Gate is a decent sequel but probably wouldn’t hold up well on its own. I definitely felt a preference for one of the book’s split narratives over another, whereas that wasn’t a problem in The Fifth Season. There was also an increased amount of imagery regarding the non-human creatures in this book, which I enjoyed immensely.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: The Secret History by Donna Tartt - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 3.5 out of 5. I hated this book until I loved it. The first chapters were a lot of work — I had to get through about 150 pages of dense references and slow character development. From that point onward, however, I was sucked in by a gripping thriller and a deep investment in the characters’ fates.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: The Familiars by Stacey Hall - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 3 out of 5. I have very mixed feelings on The Familiars, and I had to wait a few days after reading it so I could let my thoughts settle before writing this review. The characters were meh — one was believable and annoying, the other deliciously evil and unbelievable. I also disagree with the argument that this is a feminist text, and I wish there was more of a deep dive into the magical elements.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rating: 4.5 out of 5. This book is everywhere right now and for very good reason. It is a stunning work of art that masterfully dives into the worlds of two people across time and geographical distance. Schwab does a fantastic job in her careful development and structure of the story. It’s the first read in a really long time that I had a strong emotional reaction to and I have very little complaints.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Not gonna lie, the cover of this one is what drew me in. Upon actually opening up the book and reading it, though, I found a pleasantly meaningful story about what it means to love, lose, and grieve. Of course, this wasn’t a perfect read. I have my qualms with the shortness of it and the use of one of the characters as a plot device. Still, I’m glad I picked it up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - Overview: Rating: 2 out of 5.</image:title>
<image:caption>I picked up this book because of the high ratings on it received on Goodreads and the huge following it has on bookstagram. While it wasn’t my favorite read of the year by far, I definitely became more invested in it as I read on. My biggest beef with the story is the main romance — which seemed to come out of nowhere. Still, I loved the relational dynamics between Feyre and her siblings, as well as the mystery and suspense built around the growing darkness in Prythian. I hope that the next book in the series will have more world-building.</image:caption>

<image:title>Book Blog - Review: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin - Overview:</image:title>
<image:caption>Rating: 5 out of 5. I finished this tome of a book in all of 2 days. Jemisin’s concept is unlike anything I’ve ever read before – despite the book falling under the popular genres of fantasy and post-apocalyptic. The world building, which can be intense at first, is beautiful and well worth the time spent to understand it. Oh, and did I mention the perfect balancing of three separate storylines?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rating: 3 out of 5. I actually finished this book before I read Dread Nation. I’ve been putting off writing the review because, to be honest, I found it a little disappointing. <image:title>About - Hi. I’m Eve.</image:title>
<image:caption>I am the creator of Eve Reads. I am a 26-year old bookworm living in the Midwest. My beverage of choice is chai tea, I have a certain partiality for chocolate cake with vanilla icing, and the first and most consistent love of my life has always been the written word.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - How it started.</image:title>
<image:caption>Like many younger readers, I didn’t start picking books up on my own — I was encouraged by a parent. At the age of 6, I spent most evenings cartwheeling around the living room while my mom read fantasy books aloud to me. I became hooked. I practically inhaled every word. I hid flashlights under my pillow and perfected the art of silently turning pages when it was long past my bedtime. I always had a book on me, no matter the occasion. Mealtimes, school hours, and even car rides (during which I was prone to motion sickness) were no exceptions to this rule. Books were like secret maps to discovering the magic in my own world. Porch lights became fairies, walking to the nearest 7-11 turned into a thousand-mile quest, and standing up to the neighborhood bully was equivalent to slaying a dragon. Because of books, the world was enchanting and terrifying and always had some new adventure to offer up.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - How it’s going.</image:title>
<image:caption>Fast forward to May 2020. It’s been 10 years since I’ve read as consistently and fervently as I did when I was in elementary school. The U.S. is failing to cope with a global pandemic. I have graduated from a well-known public university with an honors degree in arts management. Jobs are hard to come by, theatre jobs (my specialization) even harder so. The pressure to do and be and succeed is increasing everyday. Yet, something peculiar happens: I pick up a book. Then another one. And another one. 30 books later and the magic from the page starts to seep into the world around me again. I don’t have things quite figured out yet, but if characters like Frodo Baggins can make it from the Shire to Mount Doom, then I can make it through this chaos that is adulthood. So, here we are, fellow readers. After years and years, books save me. Between covers and pages and punctuation I have found a sense of hope and joy. I want to share this hope and joy with you. Hence, the creation of Eve Reads. This is the story of my journey with books, my dipping back into the magic. I can’t yet promise the high-grade quality of seasoned book reviewers, just my honest opinion and a passion as large as my to-be-read list. I hope you’ll join me.</image:caption>
